Ogun Government Halts Awujale Selection Over Petitions and Security Reports

January 21, 2026

The Ogun State Government has suspended the nomination process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland following petitions and security reports from key stakeholders. The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, responsible for producing the next Awujale, had recently nominated over 90 aspirants through their families.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, explained that the decision was taken to preserve public order, maintain the integrity of the process, and uphold the sanctity of the stool. He noted that the stature of the late Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, makes the selection process highly scrutinized.

The government, acting under the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, directed local authorities to inform the Kingmakers’ Council and Fusengbuwa Ruling House to await further instructions before resuming the selection exercise.
