Premier League Matches to Pause for 16 Days From September 21

September 16, 2026

The English Premier League will have its first-ever 16-day international break this season, running from September 21 to October 6.

The league will complete Matchweek Five on September 20 before the break, with Matchweek Six scheduled to resume on October 10.

The extended break follows a decision by FIFA to merge the traditional September and October international windows. During the period, European countries will play UEFA Nations League matches, while African nations will continue with Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Teams from other regions, including Asia, South America and CONCACAF, will also play international fixtures and friendly matches during the window.

The Premier League said the new calendar is intended to reduce the number of times players travel between continents for international duty and cut the number of breaks during the first half of the season.

The change was approved by the FIFA Council in 2023, with player welfare among the factors considered.

The Premier League will have two more international breaks this season, from November 9 to 17 and from March 22 to 30.
