CAF Expands Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to 16 Teams from 2026

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will expand from 12 to 16 teams starting with the 2026 edition, ushering in a new phase for the tournament. CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the growth of the competition reveals the progress of women’s football in Africa, adding that the expansion will create more opportunities for players and raise the profile of the game across the continent. Further details on the revised qualifying format will be released after the ongoing Executive Committee meeting in Kinshasa.
