Kwara State Governor Frees Inmates, Commutes Sentences Ahead of Eid-kabir
In a compassionate gesture ahead of the Eid-kabir festival, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrazaq AbdulRahman, visited all Custodial Centres in the state on Friday, June 14, 2024.
His visit aimed to extend goodwill to inmates and demonstrate his commitment to their welfare.
During the visit, Governor Abdulrahman granted freedom to twenty-three (23) convicted inmates, allowing them to celebrate the festive season with their families outside the confines of the correctional facilities.
Additionally, he reviewed the cases of eighteen (18) lifers, resulting in significant reductions in their sentences:
Commuted to 21 Years: 10 lifers
Commuted to 10 Years: 6 lifers
Commuted to 2 Years: 2 lifers
Sentence Reduced to 6 Months: 1 female inmate originally serving 7 years. Moreover, the Governor personally facilitated the transportation of these released individuals to their respective homes, ensuring they could reunite with their families for the festive period.
The decision to release and commute sentences was based on humanitarian grounds, taking into account the improved health conditions and positive behavioral changes observed in the inmates. It reflects the Governor’s belief in second chances and rehabilitation.
The controller of Corrections in Kwara State, Mr. Danmairomu Shuaib Ayodeji, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Nigerian Correctional Service for the Governor’s compassionate act.
He encouraged the released inmates to uphold good conduct and serve as positive examples in their communities, steering clear of criminal activities.
Acknowledging the support from the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, and the State Ministry of Justice, Governor Abdulrahman emphasized that such measures contribute to reducing congestion in correctional facilities while promoting justice and mercy in the criminal justice system.
