Tinubu: Railway Transport Critical to Africa’s Industrial Growth

September 16, 2025

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the importance of rail transport as a driver of industrialization, sustainable development, and economic growth, saying Nigeria and the rest of the world need railway systems more than ever.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd International Railway Conference in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu—represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima—described railways as safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly alternatives that reduce road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and strengthen economic connectivity.

The two-day conference, themed “Opportunities and Challenges in Railway Development in Africa: A Call for Investment”, brought together stakeholders across the continent to explore ways of enhancing rail infrastructure and partnerships.

Tinubu noted that his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes railway modernization, citing projects such as the Kano–Maradi line, designed to expand trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He emphasized Nigeria’s role as West Africa’s economic anchor and the need to lead in modern logistics.

He called for stronger collaboration with the private sector to sustain and expand rail networks, urging participants to take advantage of the platform to shape actionable outcomes.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project as a bold step toward transforming Nigeria’s transportation system, while Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, said rail remains a vital enabler of economic growth and national integration. Alkali highlighted the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval of ultra-modern bus terminals across six geopolitical zones as part of wider transport sector reforms.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, linked railway development to Nigeria’s gas potential, noting the synergy between sustainable energy and rail infrastructure.

Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, said the conference marked a turning point for Nigeria, pledging support to ensure accountability, speed in approvals, and foreign investment inflow into the sector.

The conference, organized by the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry and private partners, concludes on Tuesday, September 16.
