Resident Doctors to Begin Five-Day Nationwide Warning Strike September 12

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) will commence a five-day nationwide warning strike on Friday, September 12, 2025, to press for the fulfillment of outstanding salary and welfare demands.
The strike, scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. and end on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, was approved after NARD’s online National Executive Council meeting, which concluded in the early hours of Thursday, September 11.
The industrial action coincides with ongoing strikes by resident doctors in Abuja and Oyo State and follows the expiration of a 10-day ultimatum issued to government agencies.
Resident doctors, who constitute a large portion of the workforce in teaching and specialist hospitals, are demanding immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, arrears from the 25–35 percent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, and settlement of long-standing salary backlogs. They are also calling for the release of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates, and issuance of certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Additional concerns include welfare issues affecting doctors in Kaduna State and unresolved matters at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
If carried out, the strike will disrupt operations in emergency departments, intensive care units, operating rooms, specialized clinics, diagnostic services, and laboratories across district hospitals and primary healthcare centres nationwide.
Medical experts have cautioned that the action could worsen challenges in the health sector, which is already strained by brain drain, outdated facilities, and poor welfare conditions.
