Bauchi Reaffirms Free Healthcare for Pregnant Women, Children Under Five

The Bauchi State Government has restated its commitment to providing free antenatal care and essential drugs for pregnant women and children under five, as part of efforts to improve family health and reduce maternal and infant mortality.
The pledge was reiterated during a media tour of healthcare projects initiated by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed’s administration. Visits to primary healthcare centres in Konkyel, Darazo Local Government Area, and Dagauda, Dambam Local Government Area, showed that provisions had been made for essential drugs, delivery kits, and other commodities to support the free medical services.
At the Konkyel Primary Healthcare Centre, officials confirmed the steady supply of drugs and maternal kits. In Dagauda, the Model Primary Health Centre has been upgraded from a 30-bed to a 49-bed capacity, equipped with a 24-hour solar power system and improved water supply. Security has also been reinforced with support from the African Development Bank and the local government authority.
However, rising patient patronage — including inflows from neighbouring states — has created a staffing gap at the Dagauda facility. Health officials say more personnel are needed to effectively manage the increased workload. The initiative is a key element of the state government’s strategy to expand access to quality healthcare and strengthen maternal and child health outcomes across Bauchi State.
