Kwara Assembly Raises Alarm Over Harmful Cosmetics

The Kwara State House of Assembly has called for urgent measures to curb the sale and use of harmful cosmetics, popularly known as “organic creams,” describing the trend as a growing public health threat.
Lawmakers stressed the need for stricter oversight from regulatory bodies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). They urged the agencies to intensify monitoring, strengthen enforcement, and ensure that products containing dangerous chemicals are withdrawn from circulation.
The motion, sponsored by Yusuf Maryam Aladi, a member representing Ilorin South constituency, highlighted the rising cases of health complications linked to unregulated cosmetic products. Many of these creams and soaps reportedly contain hazardous substances, including mercury and steroids, which have been associated with cancer, infertility, and organ damage.
Other members of the Assembly supported the motion, warning that unchecked exposure to harmful cosmetics could worsen public health outcomes and strain the state’s healthcare system as the House unanimously adopted the motion, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the well-being of residents and urging regulatory authorities to act decisively against the menace.
