Harry Kane Becomes First English Ballon d’Or Winner in 25 Years
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has become the first English player in 25 years to win the men’s Ballon d’Or after scoring 73 goals for club and country last season. Kane received the prestigious award at a ceremony in London on Monday, becoming the fifth Englishman to win the honour after Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen, who was the last English winner in 2001. Kane beat Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal to the award, while Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the women’s prize. Yamal, however, won the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award, while Vicky Lopez took the women’s equivalent. Other winners included Luis de la Fuente as men’s coach of the year, Pere Romeu as women’s coach of the year, and Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, who received the Socrates Award for humanitarian work.
