CJN Warns Judges Against Political Manipulation Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has warned judges against allowing politicians to manipulate the judiciary for electoral advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the 2026 roundtable for heads of courts organised by the National Judicial Institute in Abuja on Monday, she cautioned against forum shopping, concealing related cases and seeking conflicting orders from courts of equal jurisdiction. She called for careful scrutiny of applications, full disclosure of relevant facts and timely handling of election-related disputes in line with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The CJN also called on heads of courts to address delays in judicial proceedings, reduce case backlogs and ensure judges sit at scheduled times. She said poor case management and repeated adjournments could undermine public confidence in the justice system, while directing court leaders to notify lawyers and litigants promptly when sittings are cancelled. Kekere-Ekun further called for transparent, merit-based judicial appointments and respectful treatment of all court users, regardless of their social or financial status.
