NOA Calls for Greater Respect for Nigeria’s National Symbols
The National Orientation Agency has called on Nigerians to show greater respect for the country’s national symbols, including the Nigerian Flag, National Anthem, National Pledge, Naira and Coat of Arms.
The Director-General of the agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call ahead of the 2026 National Ordinance Day, with the theme, Our National Symbols, Our Pride. He said the symbols represent Nigeria’s history, identity, sovereignty and shared values.
Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to handle the national symbols properly, particularly the Nigerian Flag and the Naira. He advised citizens to avoid mutilating, defacing, spraying or otherwise abusing the currency, while also cautioning against the improper alteration or use of the Coat of Arms.
The NOA Director-General also encouraged Nigerians to sing the National Anthem with understanding and allow its messages of unity, justice, peace and service to guide their actions.
He called on schools, government institutions, religious and traditional organisations, businesses, civil society groups, the media and families to use the occasion to educate citizens, especially young Nigerians, on the meaning and proper use of the country’s national symbols.
