UK Condemns Thuggish Anti-Immigration Protests at English Ports
The British government on Monday condemned the intimidating and thuggish behaviour of anti-immigration protesters who confronted police and attempted to prevent migrants rescued after crossing the English Channel from reaching shore in Portsmouth. Hundreds of demonstrators, some wearing masks, gathered at the southern English port and later tried to block buses carrying the migrants to an asylum processing facility. The protest followed a similar demonstration in Dover, where protesters blocked roads leading to the country’s busiest ferry port, disrupting travellers and cargo traffic. The government said peaceful protest is a fundamental right but must not descend into disorder.
