KWSG Calls for Preservation of Nation’s Cultural Heritage
ILORIN — The Kwara State Government has urged Nigerians to preserve and promote the nation’s rich cultural heritage, describing culture as an important tool for national unity, identity and sustainable development.
The call was made by the Secretary of the Kwara State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Jamiu, while receiving the Zonal Director, North Central of the National Orientation Agency, Princess Dr. Priscilla Gondoaluor, on a courtesy visit to his office in Ilorin.
Mr. Jamiu highlighted the role of the arts in promoting government policies and strengthening social cohesion. He said one of the Council’s primary responsibilities is to disseminate government programmes through cultural activities such as drama, music, dance and other creative expressions. He noted that these platforms remain effective for educating the public and fostering national consciousness. According to him, culture is the identity of every society and serves as a unifying force despite diverse backgrounds.
The Secretary said cultural differences should be appreciated rather than condemned, and that no culture should be regarded as inferior simply because it differs from another. He warned that neglecting indigenous values and traditions would mean losing a vital part of the nation’s identity. He stressed that cultural heritage must be protected through continuous education and public enlightenment.Mr. Jamiu also disclosed that the Council partners with government agencies and organisations to promote cultural awareness and generate revenue through performances at official programmes. He added that the Council responds to invitations to perform at government and private events, using drama, music and dance to entertain and to communicate developmental messages.
He urged stakeholders including government institutions, traditional rulers, community leaders and young people to work together to safeguard Nigeria’s cultural values. In her remarks, Dr. Gondoaluor called on Nigerians to embrace the nation’s core values and ethical principles. She said restoring moral standards is crucial to achieving sustainable national development. The NOA Zonal Director lamented the decline in societal values, noting that corruption, the quest for quick wealth and the erosion of respect for authority have weakened the country’s moral foundation. She said Nigeria has witnessed a breakdown in values that once defined the nation, especially among the younger generation.
