Australia, India sign uranium export agreement to boost clean energy cooperation.
Australia and India have signed an agreement that will allow the export of Australian uranium to support India’s civilian nuclear energy programme. The deal was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne, where he held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The agreement provides for long-term uranium supplies for peaceful purposes under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The partnership is expected to help India achieve its target of generating 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy by 2047 while supporting Australia’s efforts to expand trade beyond its reliance on China. The two countries also agreed to strengthen defence cooperation, improve critical minerals supply chains, and establish a temporary space tracking terminal on Australia’s Cocos Keeling Islands to support India’s space missions. India is Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at 54.4 billion Australian dollars during the 2024–2025 financial year.
