National Orientation Agency Calls for Ethical Leadership Across All Levels
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Bauchi State chapter, has reaffirmed that ethical leadership founded on integrity, accountability, and public trust remains essential for sustainable national development, urging both leaders and citizens to embrace values that strengthen institutions and promote national unity.
The position was presented by the North-East Zonal Director of the Agency, Mallam Nuru Yusuf Kobi, who represented the Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, during a panel session on Ethical Leadership and National Development at the Ethical Heroes Award Conference held in Bauchi on Saturday.
Addressing participants drawn from government institutions, security agencies, traditional and religious institutions, academia, the private sector, civil society organisations, and development partners, the NOA representative stressed that ethical leadership should be measured not by position or title but by a consistent commitment to doing what is right.
He noted that integrity must become a daily habit, shaping both individual and institutional conduct, adding that every honest act by public servants, security personnel, traders, teachers, community leaders, and ordinary citizens contributes to building a more responsible and prosperous nation.
The Agency maintained that public trust remains the foundation for effective governance, peaceful coexistence, and economic development. It explained that when citizens trust their leaders, cooperation with government improves, investors gain confidence in public institutions, and young people are encouraged to pursue legitimate means of success.
The NOA also warned that corruption, abuse of office, and unethical conduct continue to weaken institutions, erode public confidence and hinder national progress. It stated that rebuilding trust requires consistent ethical leadership across all levels of society.
Highlighting ongoing interventions by the Agency, Mallam Kobi said the National Values Charter serves as a practical framework outlining the shared responsibilities of government and citizens in promoting patriotism, integrity, fairness, discipline, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship.
He further explained that through its nationwide presence across states, local government areas and communities, the Agency continues to engage Nigerians in local languages by taking messages of national values directly to homes, schools, markets, places of worship and traditional institutions where lasting behavioural change can be achieved.
The NOA also called on public institutions, security agencies, educational establishments, religious bodies, professional associations, civil society organisations, and the private sector to institutionalise ethical values by promoting transparency, accountability, fairness and service above personal interest.
