US Indicts Mexican Governor, Officials Over Alleged Cartel Links

April 30, 2026

United States prosecutors have charged Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine current and former Mexican officials over alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, in a move that could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.

The indictment, unsealed in New York, accuses the governor and others of collaborating with cartel leaders to facilitate the movement of large quantities of narcotics into the United States in exchange for political support and financial incentives. Authorities allege that the arrangement included assistance during Rocha Moya’s 2021 election campaign, with cartel operatives reportedly influencing the outcome by targeting political opponents and interfering with voting processes.

Prosecutors further claim that individuals within the governor’s administration played roles in supporting the scheme, including providing sensitive information about opposition figures. Many of those indicted are said to be aligned with factions linked to the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the imprisoned cofounder of the cartel.

The US government described the case as part of a broader effort to combat organised crime networks and their influence on political institutions. Officials argue that the alleged actions undermined governance structures and enabled the expansion of illicit drug operations.

Rocha Moya has denied all allegations, maintaining that the charges lack evidence and are politically motivated. Mexican authorities also questioned the strength of the US case, stating that documents requesting arrests and possible extraditions did not include sufficient supporting proof.

The development is considered unusual, as indictments against sitting senior Mexican officials are rare. Analysts suggest it may signal a shift in Washington’s strategy, with increased focus on alleged connections between organised crime and political leadership.

The case places added pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum, given the governor’s ties to the ruling Morena party and his political alignment with former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Observers note that any response by the Mexican government could carry significant domestic and international implications.

The charges come amid intensified efforts by Mexican authorities to tackle powerful drug cartels, following a series of recent operations targeting high-profile figures within organised crime networks.
