Abia Inaugurates Sports Federation Boards to Boost Youth Development
The Abia State Government has inaugurated the boards of various sports federations under the State Sports Council as part of efforts to reposition the sector for youth empowerment, job creation, and economic growth.
Governor Alex Otti, represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, performed the inauguration in Umuahia, describing the move as a strategic step toward revitalising sports development in the state. The administration sees the initiative as a means of engaging young people productively while fostering unity and social cohesion.
The government emphasised the role of sports as a tool for building discipline, teamwork, and resilience among youths, while also serving as a platform for employment and talent development.
Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, stated that the state could no longer shoulder the financial burden of sports development alone, urging stakeholders and federation members to adopt more proactive and sustainable approaches. He cautioned against inefficiency, stressing that sports associations must deliver measurable results.
Director of Sports, Obioma George, noted that ongoing investments in the sector have already yielded results, including the appointment of coaches from the state into national sports bodies.
The newly inaugurated boards are expected to drive reforms, enhance professionalism, and position sports as a viable contributor to economic and social development in Abia State.
