Lionel Messi Faces $7 Million Lawsuit Over Contract Breach Allegation
Lionel Messi is facing a $7 million civil lawsuit in the United States over an alleged breach of contract linked to a promotional agreement for international friendly matches.
A Miami-based company, VID Music Group, filed the suit at a Miami-Dade circuit court, naming Messi and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) as defendants.
The firm alleges it secured exclusive promotional rights for Argentina’s friendly matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October last year, with expectations that Messi would feature for a minimum period unless injured.
According to the claim, Messi did not play in the Venezuela friendly in Florida, a decision the company says was communicated late and led to significant financial losses, including lower ticket sales and reduced attendance.
Messi, however, was present at the match in a private suite but did not take to the field, before playing and scoring twice for Inter Miami in a league match the following day.
The company is seeking damages running into millions of dollars, though the exact amount has not been disclosed. Messi and the AFA have yet to respond publicly, while legal proceedings are ongoing.
