South African Court Sentences Julius Malema to Five Years in Prison
South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of firearm-related offences linked to a 2018 incident.
A magistrate’s court ruled that Malema unlawfully possessed and discharged a firearm during a political rally, rejecting his claim that the weapon was a toy and the shots were celebratory.
Magistrate Twanet Olivier described the act as a deliberate violation of South Africa’s firearm laws.
Malema, who leads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was convicted on multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, with sentences ordered to run concurrently.
His lawyers immediately filed an appeal, which was granted, while hundreds of supporters gathered outside the court during sentencing.
The case remains one of the most politically sensitive legal battles in South Africa’s recent history.
