Olubadan Calls for Legal Framework to Curb Land Grabbing in Ibadan
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has urged the establishment of a legal framework to tackle land grabbing in the city. The call came as he received the report of an anti-land-grabbing committee led by Niyi Akintola at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo.
Oba Ladoja emphasized that curbing land grabbing requires clear laws, including the enactment of bye-laws by local government councils under the Land Use Act. He proposed the creation of special tribunals to ensure speedy trials of land-related cases and to enforce appropriate sanctions for offenders.
The monarch highlighted alarming practices among land grabbers, citing instances where outdated or fraudulent court judgments and fake survey plans were used to claim land. He called for strict punishment against individuals submitting false petitions.
Oba Ladoja also pledged decisive action against traditional leaders, including Mogajis and Baales, implicated in land-grabbing activities, stressing the importance of integrity in the proposed tribunals.
The committee, chaired by SAN Niyi Akintola, received 179 memoranda and engaged multiple stakeholders, including state and local government officials, police, lawyers, judges, town planners, surveyors, and estate developers. Akintola described land grabbers as organized cabals with extensive networks across government and private sectors.
The Olubadan praised the committee members for their competence and integrity, while reaffirming the need for strict enforcement to protect Ibadan’s investment climate and residents’ property rights.
