ASUU Gives FG Four-Day Ultimatum to Implement New Lecturer Salary Structure
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding the immediate implementation of the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers, warning that failure to comply could trigger a nationwide strike.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, made the declaration on Thursday while addressing members of the union at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State. He stressed that the government must commence payment under the new arrangement without further delay.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna stated.
The ultimatum comes months after ASUU and the Federal Government signed a renegotiated agreement in January, which aimed to address long-standing grievances and prevent the recurring cycle of strikes in Nigeria’s university system.
ASUU has consistently argued that the delay in implementing the new salary structure undermines the welfare of lecturers and threatens the stability of academic programs across public universities. The union has also highlighted that unresolved salary disputes have historically disrupted academic calendars, affecting students and staff nationwide.
The Federal Government has yet to issue a response to the ultimatum. Observers note that if ASUU follows through on its threat, it could mark another period of significant disruption in Nigeria’s higher education sector, further compounding existing challenges in teaching and research.
This latest development underscores ongoing tensions between the union and the government, as lecturers continue to press for timely remuneration adjustments and improved working conditions.
