Russian General Shot in Moscow
A high-ranking Russian general, Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev, was shot several times in a residential building on the north-western outskirts of Moscow and was immediately hospitalized. His condition is currently unknown.
Alexeyev is a top official in Russia’s military intelligence (GRU) and has previously been sanctioned by the European Union for his alleged involvement in a 2018 nerve agent attack in the UK. He has also played key roles in the war in Ukraine, including negotiations during the 2022 siege of Mariupol and talks with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the 2023 mutiny.
The perpetrator and motive behind the attack remain unknown. Russia’s Investigations Committee has opened a criminal case for attempted murder. Past attacks on Russian military officials, including Lt Gen Igor Kirillov in 2024 and Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov in 2025, suggest a pattern of targeted assaults on high-ranking officers.
