Liverpool Agree £60m Deal for Rennes Defender Jacquet
Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal worth up to £60 million to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, beating competition from Chelsea.
British media reports on Monday said the Reds will pay an initial £55 million, with a further £5 million in add-ons, for the 20-year-old French centre-back. However, Jacquet is not expected to join Liverpool until the end of the season.
Chelsea had been strongly linked with the defender earlier in the transfer window, but the move reportedly failed to materialise due to concerns over competition for places in the club’s crowded defence.
Liverpool are currently short of centre-back options, with captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the only available senior defenders for manager Arne Slot. Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are sidelined with injuries, while Konate’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Jacquet, a French under-21 international, has made 31 appearances for Rennes since breaking into the first team last season.
