NOA, EPA Warn Nigerians Over Hazardous Dusty Weather

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has cautioned Nigerians to take precautions against the current dusty weather, describing it as an extreme form of air pollution and not the usual harmattan. The agencies warned that the condition poses serious health risks, including reduced lung function, respiratory infections, inflammation, and oxidative stress, which could disrupt the body’s normal balance.

In a statement, the agencies advised the public to adopt preventive measures such as wearing nose masks, drinking plenty of water, staying indoors as much as possible, and covering food and water to prevent dust contamination. They also recommended washing fruits thoroughly before eating, avoiding exposure to the hot afternoon sun, keeping the chest warm—especially among the elderly—and refraining from consuming cold food in the morning. Other measures include limiting the use of fans or air conditioners at night, applying shea butter to the body and hair to reduce dryness, and wearing face masks in public places and during transportation.

The NOA and EPA noted that the situation may persist for some time and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, protect their health, and share the information widely to ensure public safety across the country.
