FIFA Considers Expanding 2030 World Cup to 64 Teams

September 24, 2025

FIFA is reportedly exploring the possibility of expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 participating nations, as part of plans to make the tournament’s centenary edition the most historic yet. Set to be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, the expanded format could see Argentina granted a full group stage, rather than just hosting opening matches, while Uruguay and Paraguay would each host a group to honour their roles in the 1930 inaugural tournament. A final decision on the format is expected in the coming months.
