Group Links Illegal Mining to Rising Insecurity in Kwara

A civic advocacy group, One Kwara Agenda, has identified the activities of illegal mining operators as a major driver of the growing insecurity in Kwara State.
The group explained that investigations revealed a strong connection between insecurity and communities rich in solid minerals, noting that unchecked mining activities had worsened the situation. It stressed that while isolated cases of kidnapping and other crimes exist, the spread of insecurity across the state is largely linked to the influx of illegal miners.
The group called for the strengthening of community policing and accused some traditional rulers of failing to confront the menace due to vested interests. It emphasised that lasting solutions can only be achieved by addressing the root causes of insecurity through collaborative efforts involving all stakeholders.
It also urged the government to adopt a transparent approach in combating insecurity, ensuring that residents are fully carried along in the process.
On the political front, the group advised stakeholders to prioritise merit, competence and people-centred agendas ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than divisive tendencies.
