Federal Government Threatens to Revoke Abuja–Lokoja Highway Contract Over Slow Pace
The Federal Government has warned that it will revoke the contract for the Abuja–Lokoja highway if the contractor handling the project fails to accelerate the pace of work.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, issued the warning during an inspection of ongoing reconstruction works on Saturday in Abuja. While commending the quality of work done so far, he expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress, stressing that payments would only be made based on milestone completion.
Umahi disclosed that the third section of the road, covering 53 kilometres and valued at N56 billion, is expected to be completed by April 2026. Although initially designed for asphalt, the contractor opted for concrete at the same cost, which the minister described as a better alternative.
He added that contractors who cannot meet targets will have their jobs split and reassigned, while those who show capacity may be considered for additional sections, including the 86-kilometre stretch currently under procurement.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, reaffirmed that the Abuja–Lokoja road is one of President Bola Tinubu’s priority projects, urging contractors to double their efforts. He assured that funds for the project are available and that excuses for delays would not be entertained.
Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State, represented by the Commissioner for Works, Mohammed Yusuf, commended the federal government’s commitment to infrastructure, noting that road development is key to economic growth.
