Shettima Arrives New York for 80th UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), representing President Bola Tinubu. The high-level gathering opens on Monday and will run until September 28.
On arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Shettima was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar; Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, Samson Itegboje; and other senior officials, including Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji.
Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, participate in bilateral meetings, and attend side events. He will also unveil Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, and take part in a high-level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing.
Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s priorities at this year’s UNGA, which include pushing for a UN Global Convention on Taxation, reforming the global financial system, and advancing Africa’s demand for at least two permanent seats on the UN Security Council in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
Nigeria will also reiterate its stance on peacekeeping, as well as conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Eastern Congo. Shettima is expected to meet with the Sudanese Prime Minister and attend an African Union Peace and Security Council session.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna, who is part of the delegation, said Nigeria’s participation would further position the country as a top investment destination, with a focus on solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olajumoke Oduwole, added that Nigeria will host several side events, including Nigeria Investment Day, to showcase priority sectors such as solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
