Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin Defends Frequent Overseas Travel Amid Criticism
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has responded to public scrutiny over his extensive international travel since assuming office last August.
In a televised broadcast on Saturday, the real estate tycoon-turned-political leader defended his 15 overseas trips within his first 10 months in office, citing both diplomatic obligations and economic objectives.
Thavisin, nicknamed “Thailand’s salesman” for his focus on attracting foreign investment, addressed the criticism, particularly noting the necessity of visits related to official meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), engagements in China and Japan, and the signing of a free trade agreement in Sri Lanka.
“Some of these visits are not avoidable,” remarked Thavisin, acknowledging the diplomatic and economic imperatives behind his international engagements. He emphasized that several trips were aimed at bolstering trade relations and securing foreign investments essential for Thailand’s economic growth.
The prime minister’s remarks come after public discontent prompted him to announce a two-month hiatus from international travel back in March.
The temporary halt was seen as a response to mounting criticism over the frequency and perceived necessity of his trips abroad.
Thavisin’s tenure as prime minister has been marked by his proactive stance on promoting Thailand’s economic interests globally, a strategy he reiterated during the televised statement.
He highlighted the role of foreign investment in advancing Thailand’s economic agenda, underscoring the importance of his diplomatic missions in facilitating such opportunities.
Despite the defense, the prime minister’s overseas travel continues to be a topic of debate among the Thai public and political commentators, with varying opinions on the balance between diplomatic responsibilities and domestic priorities.
Thavisin’s administration remains focused on navigating both domestic challenges and international relations amidst ongoing discussions regarding the impact and necessity of his global diplomatic engagements.
