Kaduna State Imposes Movement Restriction Ahead of Local Government Elections
The Kaduna State Security Council has announced a statewide restriction of movement on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., ahead of the local government elections.
In a statement issued Friday, Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, stated that the restriction is necessary to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process. The local government polls, set to take place across 255 wards in 23 local councils, are considered crucial for the state’s development.
“The restriction of movement is aimed at preventing any individual or group from disrupting the electoral process. We want to ensure that the elections are conducted peacefully and without any incidents,” Aruwan said.
The movement restriction applies to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as well as commercial and related activities that could hinder law and order. However, individuals performing essential services will be exempt, provided they carry proper identification and clearance.
Aruwan added that security agencies have been deployed across Kaduna to enforce the movement restriction and safeguard the electoral process. He urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“We appeal to citizens to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid any actions that may be perceived as disruptive,” Aruwan said. “Let’s work together to ensure a peaceful and successful election. The interests of our state and our people must come first.”
The commissioner also provided contact numbers for the Kaduna State Security Operations Room, encouraging citizens to report any potential security threats.
The elections, which hold significant importance for the state’s governance, will serve as a key milestone in the ongoing development of Kaduna’s local councils.
