Soldiers’ Minimum Salary Increased to N100,000, Says Defence Minister
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has announced that the minimum monthly salary of Nigerian soldiers has been increased to N100,000 following a review of military welfare by the Federal Government.
Musa, who spoke in an interview, said soldiers previously earned about N49,000 monthly before the adjustment. He, however, noted that despite improvements in personnel welfare, the military still requires more funding to effectively carry out its responsibilities.
The Defence Minister also called for tougher punishment, including the death penalty for kidnappers, arguing that stronger deterrence is needed to address rising abduction cases across the country.
On the recent abduction of pupils in Oyo State, Musa said the kidnappers were allegedly using the children as leverage to demand the release of detained commanders. He added that security agencies were working to rescue the victims while dismissing claims of poor feeding among soldiers.
