Shettima Urges APC Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections, Warns Against Internal Division
Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for unity and restraint within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a personally signed message titled “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof,” Shettima cautioned party leaders, aspirants, and supporters against actions that could create internal divisions and weaken the party’s electoral chances.
He said that while consultation, lobbying, and competition are normal parts of democracy, party members must avoid turning political differences into personal enmity.
“A political party is not a battlefield; it is a family,” Shettima stated, warning that internal conflicts could undermine the APC’s prospects at the polls.
According to him, although primaries will produce candidates, only a united party can secure victory in a general election.
“The primaries will produce candidates, but the general election will test the strength of our unity,” he said.
Shettima also urged fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness in the conduct of party primaries, adding that aspirants should be treated with respect while delegates are allowed to make independent choices without intimidation.
He further advised aspirants and their supporters to exercise restraint, stressing that political ambition should not come at the expense of party stability.
“No ambition is worth the destruction of the platform that nurtured it,” he warned.
The Vice President also noted that Nigerians are closely watching how political actors manage disagreements, describing maturity in handling setbacks as a key test of leadership.
He referenced the leadership style of President Bola Tinubu, saying it reflects the importance of coalition-building, accommodation, and resilience in sustaining democracy.
Shettima concluded by urging stakeholders to prioritize collective interest over personal ambition, saying party members should “contest, but not destroy” and “disagree, but not defame.”
