NNPC Completes River Niger Crossing on OB3 Gas Pipeline, Unlocks 2 Billion SCF Daily Capacity
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has completed the River Niger crossing of the 130-kilometre Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben, OB3, Gas Pipeline, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s gas infrastructure expansion.
NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, a wholly owned NNPC subsidiary, executed the crossing about two kilometres beneath the River Niger riverbed using horizontal directional drilling technology. The work was carried out by the NNPC project team in partnership with PCE Nig. Limited.
NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the completion as a “defining milestone” that demonstrates disciplined execution and technical excellence. He said the crossing unlocks a critical link that will enhance gas supply reliability, deepen domestic utilisation, and support power generation and industrial growth.
The OB3 Pipeline is designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, linking the Eastern gas network to the Western network and connecting to the Northern corridor through the AKK Pipeline. NNPC said the crossing will immediately unlock over 500 million standard cubic feet of incremental gas for the domestic market and supply to West Africa.
Ojulari credited the success to lessons from the AKK River Niger Crossing in June 2025, along with rigorous project governance and adaptive engineering. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his Gas-to-Prosperity agenda, the NNPC Board, host communities, NGIC staff, and PCE Nig. Limited for their roles.
He added that the project supports the Federal Government’s 2030 targets of 3 million barrels of crude per day and 12 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, and reaffirmed NNPC’s commitment to expand energy availability and drive industrialisation.
