NATO Condemns Russia After Drone Crashes Into Romanian Apartment, Injuring Two*
Romania and its NATO allies have condemned Russia after a drone from an overnight strike on Ukraine crashed into an apartment block in the eastern city of Galați on May 29, injuring two people.
Bucharest called the incursion a serious violation of international law and summoned Russia’s ambassador. Foreign Minister Oana Toiu warned of diplomatic consequences and further EU sanctions. President Nicușor Dan said Romania would not accept Russia’s war being “transferred” to its citizens and ordered new measures against Moscow.
Romanian radar tracked the drone in its airspace before it hit a residential building, triggering a fire. Two F-16 jets and a helicopter were scrambled, and residents were evacuated. Two people suffered minor injuries.
Romania said it will fast-track anti-drone defences under the EU’s SAFE programme and urged NATO to speed up transfers of such systems. Several NATO states have reported drone and airspace incursions in recent months amid spillover from the Ukraine war.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned “Russia’s recklessness,” while France, Poland, and the European Commission also criticised Moscow. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that escalating attacks risk spiralling “out of control” and called for an immediate ceasefire.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv stands with Romania and stressed that boosting Ukraine’s air defences is key to reducing risks for neighbouring countries.
