*NAMA Defends Pension Handling, Highlights Staff Reforms*
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has defended its handling of retirees’ outstanding entitlements, saying the liabilities were inherited from previous administrations and that it has started taking steps toward resolution.
In a statement on Friday, NAMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Abdullahi Musa, said recent allegations against Managing Director Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar was misleading and ignored the bureaucratic procedures required for public sector payments. The agency explained that settlements must go through documentation, vetting, budgetary appropriation, and regulatory approvals before disbursement.
NAMA said the current management had secured renewed approvals for the settlement process after engagements with retirees’ representatives, and dismissed claims of deliberate neglect.
Beyond pensions, the agency highlighted what it called far-reaching staff welfare reforms under Umar’s leadership, including full implementation of the Staff Conditions of Service and approval of a new salary structure that has improved remuneration and morale.
NAMA said the changes are aimed at repositioning the agency as a professionally competitive air navigation service provider to sustain operational efficiency in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
