Kwara Government Commences Construction of Multi-Storey Hospital Complex, Closes Civil Service Clinic

June 17, 2024

The Kwara State Government has initiated plans for the construction of a modern multi-storey hospital complex at the Civil Service Clinic, aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery amid the state’s rapid population growth and increasing demand for quality secondary health services.

The decision to embark on this project was announced following approval obtained during a recent cabinet meeting, where the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed el-Imam, highlighted the necessity for renewing and expanding the existing infrastructure.

During the cabinet meeting where approval was secured for the project, Commissioner for Health Dr. Amina Ahmed el-Imam emphasized the necessity of the facility, stating, “The current physical infrastructure at the Civil Service Clinic deserves both renewal and expansion in order to sustain the desired high quality of service and high patronage from the public,” and added that such expansion would “mitigate the space constraints experienced currently which has hampered its functionality to meet up with the growing demands for basic health care services.”

Dr. Amina emphasized that the current facilities at the Civil Service Clinic require substantial upgrades to maintain high service standards and meet the growing healthcare needs of the public.

The construction contract has been awarded to Craneburg Construction Ltd. for a total sum of N12.4 billion, with a projected completion period of 18 months.

To facilitate the commencement of construction activities, the government has officially closed the Civil Service Clinic. In-patients previously admitted to the clinic have been relocated to alternative government healthcare facilities, primarily the Sobi Specialist Hospital located at Alagbado in Ilorin.

The multi-storey hospital complex is expected not only to improve healthcare accessibility and efficiency but also to relieve pressure on the General Hospital in Ilorin, which currently serves as a tertiary hospital for training medical students from Kwara State University (KWASU).
