Flamingos to Resume Training in Abuja Ahead of 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup
The Nigeria women’s U17 national team, known as the Flamingos, will resume their training camp in Abuja this week in preparation for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. The decision to begin preparations follows the imminent departure of the Falconets for Colombia, as confirmed by a top official from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
In a conversation with newsmen on Sunday, the NFF official stated, “Flamingos will commence their camp in Abuja this week. With the Falconets set to leave for Colombia, it is essential for the Flamingos to start their preparations now. This will provide the coach with ample time to fine-tune the team and ensure they are in optimal condition for the World Cup finals in October.”
The 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in the Dominican Republic, will be the eighth edition of the tournament. It marks a significant milestone as it is the first FIFA tournament to be hosted by the Dominican Republic. This edition will also be the last to feature 16 teams before the competition expands to 24 teams in 2025. It will be the final biannual edition of the tournament.
Nigeria’s Flamingos have been drawn into Group A, where they will face tough competition from host nation Dominican Republic, New Zealand, and Ecuador. The team will kick off their campaign against New Zealand on October 16 at 7:00 PM. They will then take on Ecuador three days later before concluding their group stage with a match against the hosts, Dominican Republic, on October 22, 2024.
The Flamingos’ return to Abuja for training is a crucial step in their preparation, aiming to ensure that the team is well-prepared and competitive ahead of the World Cup. With the tournament fast approaching, the focus will be on refining tactics and building team cohesion to secure a strong performance on the global stage.
