DRC Government and M23 Rebels Agree on Peace Monitoring Mechanism
The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the M23 rebel coalition have agreed to establish a peace monitoring mechanism during ongoing talks in Switzerland aimed at reducing violence in eastern Congo.
The negotiations, supported by mediators from the United States and Qatar, are part of renewed efforts to enforce a fragile ceasefire despite continued clashes on the ground.
The agreement will create a joint body to monitor security conditions, track humanitarian issues, and report ceasefire violations, with support from the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country.
Fighting has continued in eastern DRC, where rebel activity has displaced thousands and worsened an already severe humanitarian crisis, even as diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region continue.
