Nnadozie Hails Ballon d’Or Nomination as Breakthrough for African Football

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has described her nomination for the Women’s Ballon d’Or as a major milestone, calling it a “miracle” and a breakthrough for African football.
The 24-year-old is the first African goalkeeper to be shortlisted for the prestigious award, a recognition she believes reflects years of dedication and hard work. She expressed hope that the nomination would inspire more young African girls to pursue their dreams and prove that success is achievable on the global stage.
Nnadozie, who joined English Women’s Super League side Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, said the move fulfilled her long-time ambition of playing in England. She noted that her transfer was a proud moment for her family, who celebrated the opportunity even before fully understanding Brighton’s place in English football.
Since arriving in the WSL, the former Paris FC goalkeeper has made an immediate impact. She was named Brighton’s player of the match after producing a string of crucial saves in a goalless draw against Aston Villa, underlining her readiness for the challenges of English football.
Beyond personal achievement, Nnadozie believes her Ballon d’Or recognition could help spotlight Africa’s growing football talent. She pointed to the quality of players in Morocco and South Africa as evidence of the continent’s rising standard and urged federations to continue investing in women’s football to sustain the momentum.
Nnadozie remains determined to keep improving at Brighton, stressing the importance of patience, hard work, and learning in her quest for long-term success in one of the world’s toughest leagues.
