Portuguese Officials to Officiate Argentina-Switzerland World Cup Quarter-final
FIFA has appointed a team of Portuguese match officials to oversee the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland on Saturday at the Kansas City Stadium. Joao Pinheiro will serve as the centre referee, with Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia as assistant referees, while Canada’s Drew Fischer and Michael Barwegen will act as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee, respectively.
The appointment follows FIFA’s policy of assigning officials from countries not involved in the match. The football governing body also defended its earlier decision to appoint an all-Argentine officiating team for the France-Morocco quarter-final, explaining that its regulations allow referees from countries still participating in the tournament to handle matches that do not involve their national teams.
