NRC Blames Technical Fault for Port Harcourt–Aba Train Breakdown, Offers Refunds

September 8, 2025

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has attributed the breakdown of the Port Harcourt–Aba train service to a technical fault, which occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Imo River. In a statement on Monday, NRC Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa said efforts to fix the fault failed, prompting the deployment of a rescue engine. Some passengers opted for alternative transport, while others were taken back safely.

The NRC has apologised for the inconvenience and advised affected passengers to visit its stations in Port Harcourt or Aba with proof of payment for a refund or replacement trip. The corporation confirmed that the faulty train has been returned for repairs and normal service on the route will resume on Tuesday, September 9.
