EFCC Reopens Investigation Into Atiku Over Alleged Financial Crimes Following Fresh Petition
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has commenced a fresh investigation into allegations involving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar following a petition by former House of Representatives member, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, seeking his prosecution over alleged financial crimes. The commission acknowledged receipt of the petition, dated August 27, 2026, and received on September 1, confirming that an investigation had begun.
Agbonayinma said his petition sought a review of an earlier investigation involving Atiku, conducted under former EFCC chairman Nuhu Ribadu. He argued that the matter should be revisited in the interest of accountability and the rule of law, insisting that nobody should be above the law. The former lawmaker also maintained that reporting alleged wrongdoing was part of his constitutional responsibility and urged the commission to ensure that the findings of its investigations were not suppressed. He further disclosed that he had submitted a petition on the matter to United States President Donald Trump, seeking attention to the allegations.
