Kwara Restricts Commercial Motorcycles, Tricycles to 6am–9pm Over Security Concerns
The Kwara State Government has directed commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators to comply strictly with approved operating hours of 6am to 9pm to prevent criminals from exploiting the transport sector. The Commissioner for Transportation, Lafia Korasabi, announced the directive at a security consultative meeting in Ilorin, explaining that the ongoing registration and data-capturing exercise for operators was intended to improve monitoring and prevent insurgents and other criminal groups from using transport businesses for illegal activities. He also disclosed plans to introduce uniform identification codes for operators across the state’s local government areas.
The National President of Community Policing, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Adisa Bolanta, called for greater public participation in tackling insecurity and urged relevant agencies to enforce the approved operating hours. Other security stakeholders at the meeting called for a deadline for the registration exercise, stronger compliance by transport unions and the creation of a task force to enforce the regulations. The state government also urged motorcycle and tricycle operators to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, as transport unions pledged their support for the measures.
