Ondo Governor Orders Igbokoda River Fumigation Over Foul, Stinking Odour After NAF Crash
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the immediate fumigation of the river in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, following residents’ complaints about a foul, stinking odour coming from the water after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in the coastal community last week. The governor has directed the state Ministries of Environment and Health to begin extensive fumigation to reduce potential health risks and prevent possible disease outbreaks. The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, announced the directive in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the government would also distribute nose masks and other essential health kits to residents to protect them from potential health hazards.
Aiyedatiwa has also instructed the Ilaje Local Government Council to arrange water tankers for the continuous supply of potable water if assessments confirm that the river is severely polluted and unsafe for use. According to the statement, the water distribution arrangement would remain in place until a lasting solution to the pollution concerns is implemented. The intervention follows growing concerns among residents over the river’s condition and the possible public health consequences of the foul odour. The state government says the measures are intended to protect residents while the river’s condition is assessed and appropriate action is taken.
