Somalia Repels Armed Assault on Baidoa Amid Political Tensions in South West State

*BAIDOA* — Somalia’s military says it has repelled an attack by armed groups in Baidoa, the capital of South West State, as political tensions in the region continue to escalate.

In a statement posted on X early Thursday, the Ministry of Defence said “militias” loyal to ousted Governor Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen launched coordinated attacks on the city.

“The attack began with explosions intended to terrorise civilians, but our forces responded bravely and inflicted a heavy defeat on the attackers,” the ministry said.

*Hours of Gunfire and Explosions*
Residents told AFP that gunfire and explosions were heard in different parts of Baidoa for several hours, forcing people to stay indoors. Smoke was seen rising from parts of the city after artillery hit civilian areas.

A spokesperson for the pro-Laftagareen forces claimed they had captured parts of Baidoa and that fighting was still ongoing.

However, several residents said the city had returned to calm after about six hours of clashes.

The Defence Ministry said it was still assessing casualties and would release details on fighters killed “once the assessment has been completed.”

It also accused the armed groups of operating alongside “al-Shabab terrorists.”

*Background of Political Rift*
Baidoa has been at the center of a power struggle between the federal government and South West State leadership for months.

In March, federal troops were deployed to oust Laftagareen. He made a failed attempt to retake the state in May, and in August his forces clashed with government troops for control of Baidoa.

Laftagareen is among several regional leaders opposed to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s push to move Somalia toward direct democratic elections, replacing the current clan-based electoral system.

*Wider Security Challenges*
The fighting comes as Somalia’s federal government continues to battle al-Shabab, which still controls large areas of central Somalia.

Several federal member states have also expressed opposition to Mogadishu’s centralization efforts, deepening political fragmentation in the Horn of Africa nation.

The latest assault underscores the fragile security situation in South West State, where political disputes and insurgent threats continue to overlap.

Authorities in Baidoa have urged residents to remain calm as security forces conduct mop-up operations in the city.
