IGP Warns Against Jungle Justice, Vows to Prosecute Offenders
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned Nigerians against jungle justice and mob action, saying anyone who assaults or kills a suspect outside the law will face prosecution for murder. Disu issued the warning in a public address following the circulation of videos showing mob attacks in different parts of the country. He said the law holds not only those who carry out such attacks liable, but also people who plan, encourage or facilitate them.
Disu specifically warned against mobilising crowds, obstructing police intervention, and recording or circulating footage of mob attacks where such actions are linked to the offence. He has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to treat every case of mob action as homicide and conduct full investigations using forensic and intelligence tools. The Police chief said offenders would be taken to court and prosecuted, while urging Nigerians to hand suspects over to law enforcement rather than taking the law into their own hands.
