Senate Leader Seeks Strong Funding, Safeguards for State Police

July 9, 2026

Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has warned that the proposed state police system may fail if it is not backed by adequate funding and financial independence.

Speaking during an interview today on State Police, he said a poorly funded police force could become vulnerable to influence from politicians, wealthy individuals, businesses, and criminal groups, undermining its ability to provide effective security.

Bamidele explained that the constitutional amendment under consideration would move policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List, allowing states to establish their own police services if they choose. He called for legal safeguards, guaranteed funding, accountability measures, and further amendments to relevant laws to define the structure and operations of state police, adding that local government autonomy would also be essential to achieving effective community policing.
