Flooding in Southern China Kills 39 as Tropical Storm Maysak Triggers Dam Breach
At least 39 people have been killed in southern China after severe flooding caused by Tropical Storm Maysak led to a dam breach in the Guangxi region.
Authorities in Nanning city said 26 of the deaths occurred after floodwaters from a breached reservoir swept through communities, following days of heavy rainfall. More than 130,000 residents have been evacuated as rescue teams continue operations across affected areas.
Thousands of rescuers, supported by boats and drones, have been deployed to reach trapped residents and clear debris. Officials said floodwaters are gradually receding, although more rainfall is expected in some areas.
The flooding also affected a zoo in Guigang, where more than 100 animals, including alpacas, zebras, and miniature pigs, escaped after their enclosures were damaged. The zoo has warned residents to avoid approaching the animals while efforts continue to recover them.
