NECO Exam Disrupted as Gunmen Abduct Students in Askira/Uba, Borno
Borno State Police Command has deployed operatives to the Lassa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area after suspected terrorists abducted an unspecified number of students during a National Examinations Council, NECO, examination on Monday, June 29, 2026.
According to the police, the attackers struck Government Day Secondary School around 9 a.m., shooting sporadically before taking away students and women who were selling food on the school premises. Security forces confronted the attackers, which officials said prevented a larger abduction.
The Commissioner of Police has deployed the Area Commander for Askira/Uba, and teams are currently combing nearby forests. Reports from the area indicate that one teacher was killed in the attack and another sustained gunshot injuries. Witnesses said the gunmen arrived on motorcycles through Lassa market and wore military and forest guard uniforms. Some residents also reported that two teachers and one female student were killed, though this has not been confirmed by authorities. The abduction follows a similar incident on May 16, when 42 students and pupils were taken after an attack on Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in the same local government area. The Borno State Police Command has not released a final count of those abducted, saying efforts are ongoing to account for all candidates. The Local Government Chairman and the state Commissioner for Information had not commented as of press time.
