NOA Urges Nigerians to Uphold Democratic Values on Democracy Day
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to recommit to democratic principles, active citizenship, and national unity as the country marks Democracy Day on June 12.
NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said June 12 remains a symbol of Nigerians’ resilience and fight for democracy and fundamental rights. He noted that democracy gives citizens the power to choose leaders, hold them accountable, and shape national progress.
He urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to avoid misinformation, hate speech, and political violence that threaten unity. According to him, democracy is more than elections — it requires respect for rule of law, tolerance, civic responsibility, and continuous citizen engagement.
NOA reaffirmed its commitment to voter education, public enlightenment, and promoting responsible citizenship.
The agency also commended government bodies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, media, and partners for supporting democratic governance and peaceful coexistence.
